Although cold and season is not yet here, bug bite scratches, skin rashes, splinters and scraped knees are all too common this time of year. If not treated properly, they can lead to an infection. Now, before you run to your nearest pharmacy, you might want to check out some natural antibiotics you already have in your home.

First, here’s a reminder why prescription antibiotics shouldn’t be your first choice:

Every time you swallow a drug-based antibiotic, you cause significant harm to your digestive system by destroying the healthy bacteria in your gut.

1. Raw Unpasteurized Honey/ Manuka Honey

As noted by a recent study done by researchers from the Salve Regina University in Newport, Rode Island, raw honey is one of the most potent antibiotics known to mankind

Unlike normal raw honey, manuka honey is made from bees that pollinate the Manuka bush. The result is a honey rich in naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, and dihydroxyacetone. This trifecta of substances is responsible for the potent antimicrobial properties of Manuka honey

Studies have even found that manuka honey can kill off staph infections (MRSA), an antibiotic-resistant superbug. Most drug-based antibiotics, on the other hand, are completely useless for treating MRSA.

Scientists believe a compound called beta-lapachone is responsible for Pau d’ Arco’s antimicrobial effects. Evidence suggests beta-lapachone prevents viruses from replicating and it kills bacteria by inhibiting cellular respiration.

8. Pascalite Clay

11. Turmeric

Curcumin, the bioactive substance found in turmeric, has both antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it extremely effective in treating bacterial infections and its topical use has been proven to treat MRSA and other lesions of the skin.

In research, the curcumin in turmeric was shown to be effective against Helicobacter pyloricommon in gastroduodenal ulcers regardless of the genetic makeup of the strain.  The administration of curcumin also resolved any gastric damage caused by the infection. Turmeric is also highly effective in providing allergy relief from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis or hay fever.
